Boylesports’ ad draws flak for mocking crucifixion

Boylesports’ attempt at creativity has landed the company in hot water with the UK advertising regulator.

Last Easter, the bookmaker sent out an email promotion to punters that showed a hand nailed to piece of wood against a desert background, complete with the strapline “Nailed on Bonus,” according to The Guardian.

The accompanying text invited players to take part in a “sacrilecious [sic] bonus” for the Easter weekend “in memory of the dearly departed JC.”

“Don’t just sit there gorging your own body weight in chocolate, that’s disrespectful. Get on Boylesports Gaming and get your nailed on bonus,” according to the email promotion, which ran from March 24 to March 27.

Nektan taps ex-IGT executive for CEO post

Former International Game Technology PLC (IGT) commercial director Leigh Nissim will soon call the shots in gaming content provider Nektan PLC following his appointment as the new chief executive officer of the publicly listed company.

Nissim, who was previously in charge of IGT’s growth of real money gaming across different channels and a number of regulated markets in Europe and North America, will be replacing Nektan founder and current chief executive Gary Shaw.

Nissim is set to be introduced to Nektan and its employees early in June, before finally taking over the company’s helm by late July, the company said in a disclosure to the London Stock Exchange last May 18.

Jim Wilkinson, chairman of Nektan PLC, said they will be relying on Nissim’s digital and gaming pedigree, as well as the former IGT executive’s financial background, in bringing more revenue growth to the company.

So You Want To Bet The 2016 Preakness Stakes

Betting the Preakness Stakes is always a tug-of-war between your heart and your brain. Part of you always wants to root for a Triple Crown hopeful, but the other part of you inexplicably chases the long money on an upset. So should you lean towards your heart or your head this year?

The 2016 Preakness Stakes is set to run out of Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 21st with a start time of 6:45pm EST.

The field is led by Nyquist, who gutted the 2016 Kentucky Derby in a decisive fashion. He didn’t run the best line (Gun Runner did), and he didn’t have the most advantageous post position (Exaggerator did), but nobody showed the blinding speed and ruthless competitiveness that Nyquist did on derby day. He posted the 14th fastest time in Kentucky Derby history.

And people said he wasn’t special.

Sevilla Win Record Fifth Europa League Title in Basel

Spanish side Sevilla produced a rousing comeback to beat Liverpool by 3-1 in the final of the Europa League in Basel. It was Sevilla’s third consecutive triumph in this competition.

There was fighting in the stands.

That emotion didn’t transcend to the pitch after Liverpool was swept away by a Sevilla side which has now won UEFA’s minor European Cup competition five times in the past 11 years.

Organisers blamed a lack of segregation for the pre-match skirmishes in the terraces. On the pitch, it was a different story. One team knew how to win it; the other got lost along the way.

England’s Euro 2016 win spells disaster for Ladbrokes

The possibility that the Roy Hodgson’s 23-man England squad upsetting all football teams in the Euro Cup is causing Ladbrokes Plc boss Jim Mullen a lot of sleepless nights.

Mullen admitted that England’s glory in the Euro 2016 tournament, which will run from June 10 to July 10 in cities across France, would be the biggest single risk to Ladbrokes Plc’s profit this year since it stands to lose £1 million ($1.4 million) for every game the team wins in the opening half of the tournament.

He even considered England’s win as a more pressing concern for June than the on-going merger discussions with rival betting company, Gala Coral Group.

The Ladbrokes CEO hopes that England will not be the last team standing on July 6 or it will mean more losses for the British bookmaker, which already lost £6 million (US$8.7 million) on March’s Cheltenham horse racing festival and £3 million (US$4.37 million) on Leicester City winning the Premier League.

NBA Western Conference Finals: Warriors even series against Thunders

The NBA Western Conference Finals are tied at one game apiece as the Golden State Warriors rebounded with a 118-91 blowout victory in Game 2 against Oklahoma City Thunders.

Just when thousands of OKC fans thought that their team could do the unthinkable in this year’s playoff—to beat the most dominant NBA basketball team today—the Golden State, why not? The Thunders are playing their best basketball in the season. They’ve won four straight playoff games, eliminated the San Antonio Spurs and handed the Warriors their first home playoff loss of the year.

But let’s not get too carried away, as the Golden State just proved that they weren’t fretting about one home loss.

The Warriors quickly built a seven-point lead in the first quarter of West Finals’ Game 2, and they were in control until the Thunders took a one-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half but the Golden State surged into a 57-49 halftime lead.

Lottery service provider China Vanguard revenue plummets 92% in Q1

China Vanguard Group, a company that provides services to the Chinese lottery market, saw its revenues fall by as much as 92 percent in the first three months of 2016, thanks to China’s industry-wide suspension of online lottery sales.

The Hong Kong-listed company reported a revenue of HK$4.34 million (US$559,000) for the first quarter of the year, down from HK$55.13 million (US$7.1 million) in the same period last year. Unaudited revenue for the nine months until March 31 also plummeted by 79.2 percent from HK$122.4 million (US$15.76 million) in 2014 to HK$25.5 million (US$3.28 million).

China Vanguard chalked up the huge drop in its revenue to its voluntary suspension of part of its self-service lottery operations following Beijing’s ongoing suspension of online lottery sales.

In a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the company said, “On the eve of an official policy framework from the Central government that would allow the online distribution of Internet lottery, most lottery administrative offices have opted to adhere to the strictest guidelines according to the latest official commentaries and acting on a more conservative approach, that is the traditional approach through the over-the-counter paper lottery ticket distribution. Thus the Group’s has voluntarily suspended part of the self-service lottery operations.”

Cambodia gets new online Khmer Lottery from telecom firm CooTel, Dream Win Corp

Cambodian telecom firm CooTel has launched a new online lottery in the kingdom, just two months after being accused of operating an illegal lottery.

On Wednesday, Cootel officials announced the official launch of KhmerLottery, which the company developed in conjunction with Dream Win Corporation. The launch brings the country’s number of officially licensed lottery operators to six.

To start, KhmerLottery offers Cambodians the opportunity to play 5D (five-digit) lottery games via desktop computers, smartphones and SMS texts. Seven-digit games and other products will be introduced later if there’s sufficient demand.

The Khmer Times quoted KhmerLottery executive director Pich Chetra saying the company had registered with the Ministry of Economy and Finance in December 2015, and had deposited the legally required $5m reserve fund with the National Bank of Cambodia.

Vision for EquiLottery Introduced to Kentucky Horse Racing Commission

Frankfort, KY – As part of the agenda for its first meeting since last month’s reorganization of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, EquiLottery Founder and CEO Brad Cummings presented the backstory and game concept for EquiLottery, a lottery game based on the results of live horse racing, along with Kentucky research and new game elements. This innovative lottery and racing game would deliver instant exposure and new revenue to Kentucky horse racing on a daily basis.

“The Commonwealth of Kentucky and its signature horse industry have given me much more than I can ever pay back,” said Cummings. “Having the opportunity to present to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission our vision for EquiLottery, which opens up millions of new people to a sport so important to my adopted home state, is a thrilling and humbling experience.”

During his presentation, Cummings discussed the evolution of EquiLottery. From its humble beginnings as an idea hatched in his home office in 2009 to the recent signing of an agreement with IGT Global Solutions, the unquestioned leader in lottery draw systems, he walked commission members through a narrative that he described as “a long and rewarding entrepreneurial endeavor.”

“We have seen Brad work tirelessly for his vision and clear some seemingly insurmountable hurdles. We are proud to stand with him in this effort,” said Kentucky HBPA Executive Director Marty Maline. “The Kentucky HBPA is excited about the opportunity for horse racing to be instantly distributed to the masses in Kentucky and across the country in a way it has never been before. We hope that our state will lead the way on this historic innovation.”
