PokerStars asserts dominance over New Jersey’s regulated online poker market

New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market continued its record setting pace in April, as Amaya Gaming’s PokerStars site assumed dominance of the state’s online poker market.

Figures released Thursday by the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) show total online revenue hit $17m in April, up nearly 34% from the same month last year and $1.5m more than the DGE reported in March 2016. April’s total marks a new revenue benchmark, the fourth straight month of record-setting totals in 2016.

As usual, the casino vertical claimed the lion’s share ($14.4m) of the total, rising 34.4% from April 2015. But the first full month’s activity by Pokerstarsnj.com pushed online poker revenue up 30.4% to $2.6m. The sequential gain was more modest, up only around $150k from March, during which Stars was only operational for 10 days.

Stars is partnered with Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino Hotel, and the Resorts Digital Gaming partnership reported total online revenue of just under $3.5m in April, nearly twice the sum reported in March. Resorts’ casino revenue was $2.3m, around $1m more than in March, while poker revenue doubled to $1.18m.

Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies expects online gambling bill vote in June

Despite the suspension of its sitting president, Brazil could vote on its new gambling bill as early as next month.

The Brazil Gaming Congress 2016 kicked off on Wednesday, and the progress of the country’s long awaited gambling legislation was front and center. Herculano Passos (pictured), a Social Democratic Party member of the Chamber of Deputies, said he expects the final draft of the gambling bill will be delivered next week, with a vote following in June.

As written, the SB 186/2014 legislation would authorize the introduction of up to 35 brick-and-mortar casinos, 1,200 bingo parlors and 600k video bingo terminals, as well as an unspecified number of online sports betting, casino and bingo licenses. A separate bill, PL 442/1991, would repeal the ban on the popular numbers game jogo de bicho aka the ‘animal game’ lottery.

The Congress is being held during the biggest political upheaval the country has witnessed in years. Early Thursday morning, Brazil’s senate voted 55-22 to suspend President Dilma Rousseff ahead of an impeachment trial on charges of corruption. Vice-president Michel Temer will act as interim president while Rousseff’s legal fate is decided.

Seoul police break up South Korea’s largest ring of illegal gambling dens

Authorities in South Korea’s capital Seoul have broken up what they’re calling the largest illegal gambling operation uncovered to date.

On Wednesday, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced they’d raided seven apartments in the southern part of the city that housed illegal gambling operations. In the process, police arrested seven gang members while 69 other staffers and 11 gamblers were booked without being detained.

Police said the operation had begun in 2011, with the illegal gambling parlors disguised as business offices to throw off suspicion. The cautious organizers reportedly shifted their locations every two or three months in a further bid to avoid detection.

One staffer told police that the ring controlled 70% of all illegal gambling dens in Seoul. At its peak, the operation is said to have handled wagers totaling KRW 14b (US $12m) per day and the gang reportedly earned profits of KRW 30b ($25.6m) since 2011.
