The NBA Draft Preview – A Particular Set of Skills

It seems like we do the same, stupid song and dance every year. We convince ourselves that these young kids are ready to have huge impacts on NBA teams, and forget that “once in a generation” talents are harder to come by than we’d all like to admit. It’s like the NBA Draft is the last bastion of the old school thinking and that totally sucks for us as fans.

The NBA as a whole has moved in a different directions. Every team needs role players. The Warriors needed Andrew Bogut to play big defensive minutes the same way that the Cavaliers needed Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson to break out in the same way. Not every team gets a LeBron James or a Steph Curry. But everyone that’s in the NBA can find a place on a roster as serviceable specialist.

The morons that cover the NBA Draft, however, will tell you otherwise. Tim Legler will scream about wingspan as if America made it a drinking game. Dude, we were making fun of your obsession with arm length not encouraging you to scream louder. The whole process drives me nuts.

There is a better way to watch the whole process. In each draft, there’s usually up to three players who are legitimately franchise altering. Below them there are usually five or six players that can slip on to a decent roster and make a significant difference because they have a particular set of skills.

Time to Exit UK Gaming Stocks, But Not Because of Brexit Vote

There are three things gaming investors should keep in mind about Brexit before making any investment decisions. First, the likelihood of Brexit is very small. Betfair puts the odds at 78% remain. The chances are very small because the European Union already has many terminal stress fractures that will eventually doom it, and letting any one of these develop into a bona fide breakage will put an end to the political union fairly quickly. The powers that be will do everything possible to keep it together until the money runs out, and they won’t let a silly thing like a referendum get in their way.

No, there probably won’t be any systemic voter fraud, but Even if Britons voted to leave, Parliament would still have to approve the Brexit. Likely some crisis would suddenly pop up demanding “national unity among Europeans” and the UK’s exit, even if it passes on Thursday, would be indefinitely postponed for “national security” reasons. War, another debt crisis flare up, or if heaven forbid some copycat shoots up a nightclub in England, Brexit would be halted. The terrible murder of Jo Cox over the weekend almost did derail the entire vote as it is. The point is, the referendum is a farce, just like last year’s Greek referendum to accept or reject the Eurozone bailout package was a farce. The Greeks rejected the bailout and it was forced down their throats anyway.

Second, whether the United Kingdom votes to stay or leave, stocks will continue doing what they were doing before the vote. Third, no matter what the vote ends up being, gaming regulations will only be tightened, because that’s what governments generally do anyway. So if you’re hoping Brexit will lighten regulatory burdens on bookies, forget it.

Licensing specialist David Clifton said as much during a panel session at the conference of the International Association of Gaming Advisors in Malta this month:

Melco Crown rethinking Studio City’s lack of VIP gambling

Casino operator Melco Crown Entertainment (MCE) is reportedly looking at belatedly launching junket operations at its Studio City property in Macau.

Studio City made waves at last October’s official grand opening based on its complete lack of VIP gaming tables. However, the company’s chief operating officer Ted Chan Ying Tat recently suggested that Studio City was preparing to roll out the VIP red carpet.

On Friday, MCE held an event for local companies to learn more about becoming suppliers to the casino operator. GGRAsia quoted Chan telling local media that MCE was considering ending its VIP embargo in part because “we internally are not very satisfied with the current condition” of the Studio City property.

When Studio City launched, MCE CEO Lawrence Ho framed the lack of VIP rooms as a “business decision” based on (a) the company’s stated desire to focus the property on mass market guests and (b) its disappointment with being allocated only 250 new gaming tables, not the 400 the company had sought.

DraftKings inks daily fantasy marketing deal with Canadian Football League

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has signed an advertising and promotional partnership with the Canadian Football League (CFL).

On Monday, the CFL announced that DraftKings will debut new weekly CFL fantasy contests to coincide with the 59th CFL season, which officially gets underway on Thursday (23) when the Toronto Argonauts host the Hamilton Tigercats in a battle of Ontario.

The league’s statement rather excitedly claims this is the first time a major DFS operator has elevated the CFL to the status of “featured sport,” so all those taunting references to rouges on The Simpsons over the years were totally worth it.

DraftKings currently has a number of CFL contests available on its site, with entry fees ranging from 25¢ to $300. The CFL also said it would work with DraftKings to promote free-to-play CFL DFS contests across DraftKings’ online and mobile channels and the league’s media and promotional platforms.
