Mybet sells stake in Pferdewetten horse betting business due to cash crunch

German online betting operator Mybet has sold its stake in the Pferdewetten.de horseracing business after finding itself in a cash crunch.

This week, Mybet announced that it had sold its majority stake in Pferdewetten.de AG to a collection of individual investors. Mybet declined to specify how much it had raised, but the over 1.8m shares sold would be worth about €10m given their current price.

Mybet says it will deposit a portion of the proceeds with a trustee, as Mybet had used its Pferdewetten stake as collateral for the €5m convertible bond Mybet issued in November. The share sale requires Mybet to make a mandatory tender offer to creditors within 30 days.

Mybet CEO Zeno Osskó said the decision to sell was one “we would have liked to avoid” but the company has yet to receive clearance from Maltese regulators regarding last October’s sale of Mybet’s B2B payments subsidiary C4U-Malta Ltd.

South Korean casinos too small for junkets; Kangwon Land makes Forbes 2000

South Korea’s casino market is still too small to benefit from a fully developed relationship with junket operators, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers analyst.

Junkets have made themselves integral to Asian casino markets like Macau but PwC Korea partner Glenn Burm told GGRAsia that neither junkets nor Korean casino operators “have the volume to accommodate the costs” associated with bringing in foreign VIP gamblers.

More to the point, Burm said junkets have failed to gain a foothold in Korea because the casinos “prefer to do direct marketing to VIPs.” This results in fewer high-rollers making the trek to Korea but those who do generate more revenue for the casino because there’s no need to pay junket commissions

South Korea currently has 17 small casinos and a number of larger integrated resorts in development but Burm doesn’t believe the new venues will alter the junket dynamic. Burm says projects like the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority’s joint venture are “more of the US model,” i.e. focused on mass market gamblers, not VIPs.

Russia’s gambling tax haul rises but still a shadow of its pre-casino ban take

Russia’s gambling tax haul climbed for the fifth straight year in 2015 but is still only a sliver of the total collected before casinos were restricted to designated gaming zones.

According to stats compiled by Betting Business Russia, the state’s total tax raised from gambling sources came to RUB 623m (US $9.7m) last year, 17.5% higher than the previous year and 35% higher than the state earned in 2013.

However, while the numbers have nearly doubled since 2010, they pale in comparison to the RUB 33.4b (US $519m) the state earned in 2008, the year before Russia banned all casino activity to four remote and inhospitable regions of the country.

Nearly half (49%) of last year’s tax gains came via licensed bookmakers. There were 4,664 licensed betting offices in action last year, more than one-third of which were located in the Central Federal District that includes Russia’s capital Moscow.
