Iowa sports betting bill draws NBA, MLB ire

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Major League Baseball (MLB) aren’t happy with the latest sports betting measure in Iowa.

The Des Moines Register reported that the NBA and MLB opposed a bill seeking to legalize sports betting in Iowa in the event the Supreme Court declares the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) unconstitutional.

The major sports leagues aren’t actually opposing the bid of the state to legalize sports betting, per se. The problem lies with so-called “integrity fee” provision of the bill.

The NBA and the MLB both pointed out that the House Study Bill 592 fell short on safety nets that will protect the integrity of sports betting. Reading between lines, the Iowa Gaming Association said that the NBA and the MLB are demanding for major league sports fees.

In addition, it removes the process where marketing executives and traders manually set up the delivery of such messages.

Connecticut lawmaker wants East Windsor casino license revoked

Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes’ dream to build a casino in East Windsor may soon end even before it even started.

The Connecticut Post reported that supporters of a casino in Bridgeport, Connecticut, plan to introduce a bill that will revoke the East Windsor casino license granted to the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes in 2017.

Rep. Chris Rosario, D-Bridgeport, will reportedly introduce a new casino measure that will “bring Connecticut the best deal, in terms of jobs, economic development and community benefits,” while empowering the state commissioners of consumer protection.

The big idea behind the latest gambling measure is to establish an open and fair contest for a commercial casino, according to Rosario. The winner of the casino license will be required to pay the state 25 percent of all gambling revenues plus 10 percent of the slot machine profits.

CEZA plans to diversify into casino, cryptocurrency

The Philippines’ former top online gambling licensing body is reportedly looking for an alternative revenue stream after President Rodrigo Duterte clipped its licensing power.

Manila Bulletin reported that Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) is considering the possibility of creating a cluster of tourist attractions in the northern Philippines, one that will include a casino gaming complex, hotel and villas, water theme park, golf courses, a horse-riding layout and a premium duty-free outlet shopping mall.

CEZA Administrator and CEO Raul L. Lambino said the tourism complex will be constructed in the island of Palaui, Cagayan. China extends ‘great firewall’ to block crypto websites

Beijing’s long tradition of blocking unwanted foreign websites using the so-called Great Firewall of China has found a new target: cryptocurrency websites.

On Monday, People’s Bank of China (PBOC) affiliated publication Financial News reported that financial regulators in the mainland are working on “a list of measures” against cryptocurrency trading. The measures include “dealing with domestic and international websites,” the reported stated, according to the South China Morning Post.

The central bank-linked publication said the decision “to remove any onshore or offshore platforms related to virtual currency trading or ICOs [initial coin offerings]” was made “to prevent financial risks.”

“Overseas transactions and regulatory evasion have resumed,” according to the Financial News article. “Risks are still there, fueled by illegal issuance and even fraud and pyramid selling.”

The Bitcoin merry-go-round stopped, and it’s Tom Brady’s fault

Well slap my tuchus and call me Shlomo. The Patriots lost. And also cryptocurrencies are crashing. (BTC at $7,048) Nobody saw that coming. I mean, come on. Nick Foles? His name sounds like a Simpsons parody of one of those Dr. Schollspoofy shoe pads. ($6,763). Just because it was the biggest run up in a single asset class in all of recorded financial history doesn’t mean it wasn’t stable! This time was different! This isn’t happening. ($6,579) The Patriots can’t lose! What’s the term for Mulligan in football? If Dr. Nick was really the quarterback then why did he catch a touchdown pass? Quarterbacks throw, they don’t catch. Bitcoin goes up, not down. ($6,223) Did the S&P 500 just plummet 184 points in two trading days? Maybe parallel universes are colliding because there’s a rip in the spacetime continuum and everything is up but quantum reality is confused. I saw that on Star Trek once. They got out of it OK. ($6,094)

Wait wait…I got a good one.

Question: What deflates faster than a football at Foxboro?

New Jumio report reveals disconnect between online gambling operators and players during the account opening process

The report recommends implementing digital identity verification tools to better meet the challenge of balancing a smooth user experience, compliance with security mandates, and operational efficiency

London, UK – February 6th, 2018 – An exclusive new report from identity verification expert Jumio has revealed that over 25% of online gambling customers have abandoned the account opening process because the process was too long or too complicated. In fact, the survey highlights that for more than 40% of respondents, opening an account takes at least 10 minutes and, for 10% of respondents, the process takes more than one hour.

Released today, The Balancing Act of Account Opening in the Online Gaming Industry highlights that, while online gambling operators understand that their customers expect a smooth, swift user experience and strong security measures, they are still failing to deliver to these often-conflicting criteria when onboarding new customers, particularly via mobile devices.

Specifically, the report reveals four key opportunities for operators to deliver a positive customer experience and streamline account opening across device types, while maintaining operational efficiency and adhering to strict KYC/AML compliance mandates:

Negreanu has a surprise take on who’s the best poker player

When most people think of poker—Texas Hold’em in particular—several names routinely come to mind. Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan are just a few of the biggest names in the game. Of course, who could forget Chris Moneymaker, who is credited almost solely for creating the online poker craze after winning the WSOP Main Event in 2013?

All of these big names are now spending more time watching the game, instead of playing. Several players who made their fortunes playing almost exclusively online, such as Viktor ‘Isildur’ Blom and Patrik Antonius, are now seldom seen. In the absence of some of the greatest players to have taken a seat at the felt, choosing the best player becomes increasingly difficult.

In order to really determine who should be considered the best No Limit Hold’em player, most will look at the high rollers who regularly cruise the Super High Roller circuit, buying in at six-figure games and walking away with seven. A few fit this category perfectly, like Feder Holz and Bryn Kenney, but Daniel ‘Kid Poker’ Negreanu has a completely different take on the subject. His choice is a name most have probably never even heard.

Negreanu, who is known for backing today’s younger generation of players, points to Steffen Sontheimer as the current best player in the world. The 27-year-old German poker pro plays a lot online under the handle ‘Go0se.core!’ and also had a tremendous run at the Poker Masters inaugural tournaments last year. Sontheimer reached the final table in four events and won two of them, ultimately stuffing his wallet with $2.7 million in less than a week. To date, he has racked up more than $7.65 million in live tournament earnings.
