Thursday NBA Odds: Bucks, Rockets favorites

One of the longest sports weeks of the year for bettors is the week the NBA is on its All-Star break, but that ends Thursday night as the Association returns with a six-game schedule.

Per usual, TNT has the marquee doubleheader Thursday and that tips off with a potential Eastern Conference playoff preview between the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, who opened as 5.5-point favorites. Boston comes out of the break sitting fourth in the East but tied with Philadelphia with a 37-21 record. Milwaukee leads the East at 43-14 – one game ahead of the Toronto Raptors – and is the current betting favorite to claim the conference title.

Let’s just say for the sake of argument that the Bucks do finish first and the Celtics fourth. That means, presuming chalk held in every first-round playoff series they would meet in the Eastern Conference semifinals. They met in the first round last year and the Celtics prevailed in seven games – the home team winning all seven.

US Poker Open News: Chidwick retakes the lead after winning the $25k PLO

Stephen Chidwick has retaken the lead from Sean Winter in the US Poker Open after beating Cary Katz, heads-up, in Event #6: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha.

Professional poker players don’t have much faith in the stock of their peers. Ask a pro if another pro is a good pro and that pro will often say, “Nah, he’s a fish.”

Stephen Chidwick is not one of those pros.

Kevin Martin leaves PokerStars, is this the end of the Twitch dream?

As Kevin Martin becomes the third high profile star to leave PokerStars in less than a fortnight, Lee Davy ponders whether this is the end of the Twitch poker dream.

PokerStars continues to lessen their wage bill after news emerged that Kevin Martin will not be renewing his contract as a member of Team Pro. The news comes hot on the Jimmy Choos that Jaime Staples and Jeff Gross also left on a rocket ship destined for somewhere else.

When Martin joined PokerStars in 2016, the signing was a surprise to the poker community. The Canadian was a minor celebrity within those borders after winning the reality TV show Big Brother but was fiddling around at the $5 multi-table tournament (MTT) level.

Martin shared the news of his departure in a short video on Twitch where he was nothing but complimentary towards PokerStars for taking a punt on him when he was as competent at playing poker as I was at navigating my way around the Tokyo tube system.

Champions League Review: Liverpool, Bayern, Lyon & Barcelona goalless

A goalless night of Champions League action as Bayern Munich hold Liverpool at Anfield, and Lyon does likewise to Barcelona in the Groupama Stadium.

It wasn’t a comfortable night.

A child missing their work-away father cried at 2.14 am, a pet terrapin gasped its last breath hidden beneath socks and pants in a teenage daughter’s dishevelled den, and the BT Sports Champions League round-up host had nothing to say.

The two previous times Bayern Munich had marched into Anfield for 90-minutes of war they left without scoring or conceding a goal. The third visit was no exception.

The World Poker Tour partners with BitMovio; Pavlovic joins partypoker

When it comes to picking up the bugle and spewing your brand over the world, nobody does a better job than the World Poker Tour (WPT). A week after signing a deal with BT Sports to showcase Season XV to viewers in the UK & Ireland, Adam Pliska and his breathtaking broom cupboard full of brilliance are at it again.

The WPT has inked a deal with a next-generation blockchain based video entertainment system known as BitMovio. Advertising an audience chocked full of millennials and Gen Z folks, BitMovio looks like a cross between Patreon, YouTube, Twitch and Netflix.

Dream11, other DFS groups call off PSL contests after terrorist attacks

Matches in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) are off-limits from Indian daily fantasy sports (DFS) operators, at least for the time being. A number of DFS operators, such as Dream11, BalleBaazi, LeagueAdda and StarPick, have united to show their support following the terror attack against Indian paramilitary forces in Pulwama.

According to an announcement by Dream11, “We strongly condemn the recent attacks in Pulwama and stand in solidarity with our Armed forces. Therefore, we have suspended all PSL matches on Dream11.

The terror attack took place on February 14 and led to the death of 40 Indian paramilitary personnel. A suicide bomber, identified as Adil Ahmed Dar, attacked a convoy while it was en route Srinagar following some well-deserved time off. Dar drove his car close to the convoy and reportedly detonated around 60 kilograms of RDX, a powerful explosive. Dar was said to have been a member of the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed and the attack has created a considerable amount of tension between India and Pakistan.

Like Dream11, a number of DFS companies posted similar messages on social media. Dream11 and MyTeam11 have also agreed to make donations to the Bharat ke Veer fund, which was created by the Ministry of Home Affairs to support the families of those killed in the attack. Dream11 has stated that it will donate the equivalent of $14.057 and MyTeam11, $7,028.
