Bet-at-home leans on eSports and ‘exotic’ leagues during sports halt
German online betting operator Bet-at-home is sticking with its 2020 financial forecasts despite the significant drop in its first quarter figures.
Figures released Monday show the Düsseldorf-based Bet-at-home generated gross betting and gaming revenue of €32.2m in the three months ending March 31, a 13.4% decline from the same period last year, while net revenue slid 18% to €25.5m.
The company, which is part of the Betclic Everest Group, blamed the declines on the halt of most major European live sports events in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to customer turnover declining 18% to €677.8m.
The company’s exit from Switzerland’s new regulated online market and ongoing struggles in Poland-facing operations also contributed to the revenue decline, but the “short-term expansion” of eSports betting and “more exotic” traditional sports leagues helped cushion the blow. The online casino vertical “remained nearly unaffected” by the pandemic and its share of overall revenue hit 57.6% in Q1.

Colorado launches online betting as land-based casinos struggle
Colorado’s legal sports betting market made its May 1 launch target, providing a rare bit of positive news for the state’s struggling casinos.
Last Friday, four Colorado-licensed online sportsbooks opened their digital doors to the state’s bettors, becoming the 18th US state to offer some form of legal betting. Six operators were officially cleared for takeoff by state regulators, but only four – Roar Digital’s BetMGM, Rush Street Interactive’s BetRivers, DraftKings and FanDuel – actually launched.
The lack of urgency in launching betting operations has a lot to do with the current dearth of major sports on which to wager due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. There are also no retail betting options at present due to the pandemic-related shutdown of all land-based casino operations on March 16.
The shutdown was reflected in the state’s official figures for the month of March, which saw the 33 casino operators report gaming revenue of just $31.9m, a 56% decline from March 2019’s returns. April’s revenue will be flat zero, and even if operators do get the nod to relaunch operations this month, it will likely be on a significantly reduced capacity basis.

SBC Digital Summit: Carolyn Harris doesn’t want to end gambling
While gambling’s role in the world is often a hot topic of debate, COVID-19 has put the conversation on steroids, particularly in the U.K. Fresh off of her claimed victory over gambling ads, All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) chair Carolyn Harris joined the “Gambling in Society” panel on day 5 of the SBC Digital Summit, moderated by Alex Tomic, CEO of Alea, with panelists Tom Galanis, Managing Director of TAG Media, Erik Bergman, Founder of Great.com and Ivan Filletti, COO of Gaming Malta.
Right off the bat, Harris wanted to make clear that she is not a gambling prohibitionist. She believes it can have a role in society, so long as it does not prey on those who have addictions, or those who can’t afford it. Tomic accepted that introduction, but noted that it’s difficult at this point to define what affordability really means.
Meanwhile, Galanis was ready to defend the industry in his rebuttal. Referencing the highlighted problem gambling cases groups like the APPG point to, he noted that the industry can’t structure its business based on emotion, but only on hard data.
Harris, mindful of her audience, continued to insist that she didn’t want to eliminate gambling entirely. “If somebody has enjoyment and pleasure and can afford to gamble online, then they should be allowed to gamble online,” she said. The problem is when they go beyond their means, changing credit cards, and operators should have to look into that.

The SBC Digital Summit comes to a close after massive success
This week has been an incredibly productive week for the entire gaming industry. With the coronavirus upending gaming operations around the world, anyone even remotely tied to the industry has had to scramble to adapt. The SBC Digital Summit helped give everyone an opportunity to see how the space is dealing with the current situation and what lies ahead when the recovery begins. Attendance for all the seminars during the summit was incredible, and everyone has come away with a new appreciation of how resilient the gaming community is. There’s little doubt that this summit will go down in history as one of the most productive gaming conferences ever held.
Getting things started on Day 1, April 27, was a look at sports gambling and how it will weather the COVID-19 storm. Sports have been temporarily forced out of commission, which means sports gambling has taken a nosedive, as well. Next up was a dive into how gambling, in general, will be able to bounce back from the coronavirus. It’s obvious that the hill will be challenging to climb, but not impossible.
Just because casinos and sportsbooks are essentially offline right now, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t gambling options available. This was evidenced by a panel on Day 1 that looked at the various options that have been available. Options may be limited, but there has still been some activity, and things are slowly beginning to pick up. Wrapping the day up was a look at eSports, as well as how the coronavirus has impacted Spain’s gaming scene.
Day 2 started with a keynote address by Jesper Kärrbrink, the chairman and creative director of Green Jade Games before moving into online casino and poker in light of the global pandemic. One of the hottest topics of the day was global regulation, which is almost certainly going to find itself the center of attention for a long time to come. Regulators are going to be busy discussing a lot of different aspects of the gaming industry for a while, including live casinos and slot offerings, two topics that were also discussed on Day 2.

Could the Premier League Circus travel with a safety net?
The return of the English Premier League is a drama that has almost been as tense as last-season’s title race between Liverpool and Manchester City. It’s certainly more entertaining than this season’s title race between Liverpool and Coronavirus.
With three weeks until UEFA’s deadline for receiving plans from the major European league as to whether they are able to resume or not, time is running out for the Premier League. Over the weekend, the problem of time has been added to by several other bumps in what is already a rocky road ahead.
There are so many factors that need to align for this season’s Premier League to return that it is starting to seem like the impossible job to reschedule the game we all love until next season. Even then, the season would usually start in August, with pre-season kicking off in six weeks time. That seems like dreamland with COVID-19 reportedly having infected 3.5 million people worldwide and led to the deaths of around 250,000 people.
Last week, Sergio Aguero expressed for the first time the concerns that players at all clubs must be having, saying that he and many of his teammates were ‘scared’ about the consequences of playing out the Premier League season. Kevin De Bruyne paused between hinting that a UEFA Champions League ban for Manchester City might lead to him leaving the Citizens to admit that the fear his Argentinian teammate at City spoke about was how anyone who caught the disease might affect their families.

NBA 2K League odds: Basketballs’ year to take over esports
The NBA 2K League is entering it’s third season this year, and it may be the most important year the league will ever know. With the regular NBA season still on ice, and esports getting the biggest spotlight it might see for a long time, the start of the 2K league on May 5 will likely see its biggest audience ever, and Bodog has odds on which team will win it all.
The league consists of 23 teams, each composed of five individual players who will compete remotely. Games will be broadcast at 7:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with four matchups each night, airing on Twitch and Youtube.
Each match-up of the regular season is a best of three series, with the winner taking the match for the season standings. The matchups for the first week of games have recently been published, with links to watch, although the league notes that they will show whichever game is most exciting at any given time.
“We are thrilled to officially tip off the 2020 NBA 2K League season remotely and hope the excitement of NBA 2K League competition provides both new and returning fans with a fun way to stay connected and engage with our league during these unprecedented times,” said NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue. “Our players have been quarantining with their teammates as they prepare for the season and will now have the opportunity to compete against one another and show they are the best players in the world.”

iGaming Next Online looks at how we can be better people and employees
The first day of the iGaming Next Online conference has come to an end, and it provided an entirely different look at how the gambling industry will battle through this COVID-19 pandemic. Each speaker gave tips on how we can not only be better during this time of crisis, but how we can also be better coming out of it.
The day began with a welcome message from Pierre Lindh, Managing Director and cofounder of iGaming Next. He gave a broad overview of the current moment for the gambling industry, but cautioned that “Life will not go back to normal before there is a vaccine.” Ultimately though, as the industry matures, he noted that we should be looking for the opportunities that come over the horizon.
Next up was a talk from Dragan Donkov, Manager Learning and Development Team at the Richmond Foundation – Malta. He spoke to how we can manage our emotional well being as the world seems to fall apart around us. While everyone deals with crisis differently, he noted that it’s normal to feel fear.
More than ever, people are feeling isolated, bored, and anxious about getting sick, losing their job and security. We’re currently feeling a collective and individual sense of grief for what we’ve lost. And most of us have gone through all the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and finally acceptance.
Videoslots expresses concerns over proposed Government measures
Malta, 4th May 2020 – Videoslots.com, one of Sweden’s leading online casinos, has warned that a one-size-fits-all attempt to protect the country’s players during the Covid-19 pandemic could drive them into the arms of unscrupulous black-market operators.
Lawmakers will this week debate the introduction of forced limits on gambling deposits, as well as restricting bonus offers to SEK100 for customers who will also have to set mandatory time limits on the amount of time they play.
The new rules, which will be discussed on May 7th, would be in addition to Europe’s strictest gambling regulations. These include a limit on bonuses to first-time customers, interaction with players setting a deposit limit over 10,000 SEK, and ensuring they are not registered with the national Spelpaus self-exclusion program.
According to Ewout Wierda, General Counsel at Videoslots and a former regulator in the Netherlands, the proposed changes would make licensed operators uncompetitive in comparison to illegal operators, who can offer tempting bonuses and limit-free play.

The infamous Ayr United kit launch photoshoot goes ahead despite lockdown Calvin Ayre extends sponsorship into its 10th year
The (somehow) ever-controversial Ayr United kit launch is here! The photoshoot took place at the CoinGeek Institute (CGI) and as with previous years features a male and female model.
This year’s models are 32-year-old Michaela Moffat and 30-year-old Ronaldi Maradina who, for the first time, were both e-born and raised in the Scottish West Coast town, and are said to be personal friends with virtually everybody in Ayr.
“Michaela & Ronaldi celebrating Ayr winning promotion to the SPL at eHampden Park in next month’s play-off victory over Hamilton.”
This is the tenth year of sponsorship from Bitcoin SV entrepreneur, Calvin Ayre who commented: “Its such a pity we lost so much of the season as The Honest Men were firmly in position for the play-off and I hope we can resume where we left off. Its staggering that in such a short time Bitcoin SV is not only the fastest growing blockchain but has over 400 projects already built on it (because it can scale) and can currently can accept 5,000 transactions per second. This utility means its value is more tangible and hence over the last 12 months is one of the best performing assets, beating even gold. Put simply Bitcoin SV is Bitcoin.”

ePL invitational returns as draw pitches Maddison against Wilson
No sooner had the first ePL Invitational tournament concluded were fans already asking the Premier League to put together another one. The absence of real-life Premier League action has left fans bereft of entertainment during lockdown and a period where the Premier League season would usually be building to a thrilling climax.
It’s a cause for celebration, then, that the ePremier League Invitational event is back, just over a week since Diogo Jota’s golden goal defeated Trent Alexander-Arnold and meant Wolves claimed the first-ever ePL title.
This time around, there are new players taking part, with some exciting 1st Round match-ups already confirmed. James Maddison of Leicester City and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson will do battle to decide who gets a Last 16 place, with another game in the 1st Round between Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon and West Ham supporter Spencer Owen going to be a game of top quality.
Maddison has been in entertaining form already this week, taking on Jamie Carragher in the Sky Sports Premier League quiz with hilarious consequences.
The sports world in the US is suffering from a $12-billion problem
March was not a good month for sports. In fact, some might say that it was the worst month in the entire history of athletics. Just days ahead of the NCAA March Madness, the college basketball tournament was called off. The NBA had just postponed its season, followed by the NHL, MLB, MLS and the PGA. The loss of March Madness and MLB’s Opening Day hit especially hard, as they’re two of the most prominent sports events in the month, and caused pandemonium for sports fans, sports gamblers and sportsbooks. With activity still suspended, and no clear picture of what will happen next, the U.S. sports world is suffering its worse economic depression ever. The tally is reportedly up to $12 billion already – in just two months – and continues to climb. The next couple of months are crucial to avoiding any further financial catastrophes.
According to analysis prepared by ESPN, the economic upheaval for the sports industry in the U.S. is going to be felt for some time. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost, and may permanently remain off the books, and, if NFL and college games seasons aren’t able to get going this September, things will be even worse. While it’s obvious that the entire world is suffering from a huge economic meltdown, the losses for U.S. sports could represent close to 20% of their aggregate value.
ESPN explains, “From stadium authorities to youth sports complexes, from rec centers to global TV networks such as ESPN, the scale of devastation is only now coming into view. Some organizations, especially at the lower levels of sports, say they’ll be lucky to survive. The pain is especially acute among the army of low-wage service workers who support pro and college sports and are now unemployed. The losses are draining tax revenue that helps support local services such as police and firefighters and contributes to the quality of everyday life in thousands of communities.”
To reach its conclusion, ESPN employed the help of Dr. Patrick Rishe, founder of the Sports Business Program at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He compiled data from the different sports leagues, relying on certain assumptions, such as whether or not leagues that were starting to get active when COVID-19 came roaring into town will be able to play at least half of their respective seasons. He also projected both the NHL and the NBA canceling their regular seasons and holding playoffs in front of empty stands.

NFL scraps international games for the upcoming season
The NFL is expected to release its schedule for the upcoming season in the next couple of days and there will reportedly be a couple of glaring omissions on the list. The football league has made it standard to host a game in London, England every year for the past 13 seasons, with four games played there last year. For the upcoming season, the Jacksonville Jaguars had two games previously on the books to be held at Wembley Stadium, and two other games were going to be included. However, it now looks as though none of these games will take place, nor will the games typically held in Mexico City.
The other two games were to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but not anymore. While there hasn’t been an official announcement by the NFL, Tottenham is said to be preparing for losses incurred by the cancellation of the games, which will amount to around $5 million, according to The Daily Mail. This would have been just the second year that the stadium hosted NFL games as part of a ten-year contract the two sides signed ahead of the 2019 season.
Despite the lack of confirmation on the part of NFL brass, the cancellation of overseas contests seems logical. There’s not much reason to put players on a plane to jump to another country, putting many of them, as well as staff, at risk. Sports Illustrated’s NFL pro Albert Breer agrees, asserting, “I tend to think that it’s unlikely we’ll be in a place in the fall where we’re sending hundreds of people on planes overseas and to Mexico, and back, without significant concern. And this is one of those situations where—given that the league might not be able to have full (or any) crowds there, and the festival the NFL puts on around these games will be difficult to pull off—risk will almost certainly outweigh reward. So I’d guess the international slate gets called off for 2020.”
The games in London and Mexico have turned out to be real crowd-pleasers, which is why the number of games held overseas has increased in recent years. The Jaguars have become regular fixtures in London, and there has even been a rumor about a possible permanent relocation by the team to England. Team owner Shad Khan has downplayed those rumors and has even invested a considerable amount of money upgrading the team’s home field, TIAA Bank stadium.

Five busted in Australia for fixing eSports matches
As long as there is money, there will be people who try to scam it out of others. It’s been that way since the first currency was introduced, and, for the past 7,000 years, nothing has changed. Ponzi schemes, cheating, scams – some people of questionable moral fortitude simply believe they don’t need to play by the rules, which ultimately impacts everyone. Five individuals in Australia fit into this category perfectly, but at least they can brag of making Aussie history. They are being charged with trying to fix eSports matches in what is now the first criminal investigation into eSports in the country.
The investigation began last year after police with the Victoria Police Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit followed a hunch that eSports contests were being thrown. The games were part of a semi-professional eSports league, and people tied to the teams of the league were given hints on how to place their bets. Neil Paterson, the police department’s assistant commissioner, asserted to media outlets last September that up to AU$30,000 (around $19,230) may have been wagered in connection with the match-fixing.
The cheating was apparently focused primarily on Counter Strike: Global Offensive games being played in the ESEA-Mountain Dew League. Law enforcement began following their hunch in March of last year, ultimately leading to the charges against the five individuals last week. One 20-year-old from Melbourne has been charged with two counts of “engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome,” as well as two counts of using corrupt conduct information for gambling, and possession of cannabis. Three other locals, also 20 years old, are each looking at three counts of using corrupt conduct information for gambling, and the fifth individual, from Sale, Victoria, is a 27-year-old who now faces five counts of the same type. All of the accused reportedly went to the same high school and university.
Paterson explains of the scandal, “We’ve got young men, typically 19- or 20-year-olds, who have no history with police. They’re [allegedly] getting involved in [corruption] offences … at quite a young age that have serious consequences for them. The sheer volume of young men involved in gambling, both in high school and in universities, is at epidemic proportions. What I’m not seeing is anyone doing anything particularly about that.”
