Soccer star Ronaldinho finally a free man in Paraguay

The soccer world was shocked several months ago when it was revealed that Ronaldinho, one of the best soccer players to have ever come out of Brazil, had been arrested in Paraguay along with his brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira. Making the issue more perplexing was the reason for his arrest. He had allegedly tried to enter the country on a fake passport, even though he had a legal, valid passport in his possession. The retired Ballon d’Or winner was put in jail and then later released under house arrest. Now, Ronaldinho is a free man once again.

Ronaldinho and his brother were given a suspended sentence of two years by a Paraguayan judge as he approved their release. They are on the hook for $200,000 in fines, but have been allowed to return home to Brazil. According to the attorneys for both, they are relocating to Rio de Janeiro, where they will establish their residency.

In an interview with Paraguayan media outlet ABC Color following his arrest, Ronaldinho asserted, “We were totally surprised to learn that the documents were not legal. Since then, our intention has been to collaborate with the justice system to clarify the facts. From that moment until today, we have explained everything and facilitated everything that has been requested of us. It was a hard blow. I never imagined that I would go through such a situation. All my life I have sought to reach the highest professional level and bring joy to people with my football.”

Ronaldinho had traveled to Paraguay at the request of a casino owner, who asked that he participate in a youth soccer clinic and the inauguration of a casino, as well as to promote his autobiography. Having the soccer phenom’s face tied to anything is always a way to attract publicity; however, the publicity received in this case was most likely not the kind anyone expected. Upon showing their passports as they entered the country, authorities discovered that they were false, and detained Ronaldinho and his brother. They later alleged that they believed the passports to be real before admitting to knowing that they contained erroneous information. Ronaldinho and his brother saw their case expedited through the judicial channels because “they admitted having had official Paraguayan legal documents but of false content and because they litigated in good faith,” according to local prosecutor Marcelo Pecci.

LeBron’s Lakers pay tribute to Kobe Bryant with style and grace

This past Sunday, August 23, basketball great Kobe Bryant would have turned 42. His life was cut short this past January when the helicopter in which he was traveling with his daughter and seven others crashed in Calabasas, California. He may be gone, but his legacy certainly isn’t going to disappear, and the LA Lakers, where he spent his 20-year NBA career, made sure to keep him alive as they played a game against the Portland Trail Blazers yesterday. By the time the contest was over, it was apparent that the Lakers went above and beyond in order to memorialize their fallen teammate.

This was Game 4 of the Round 1 series between the two teams, and the Lakers have only lost one of the games so far – they certainly weren’t going to allow another defeat as they took the court and paid homage to the five-time NBA champion. From the first tip-off, the Lakers grabbed control of the game and never let go. They got off to a 15-0 start and, at one point in the first quarter, were probably a little stunned when they looked at the scoreboard and saw the tally. They were up 24-8, which happened to be the two numbers worn by Bryant during his long career with the team.

LeBron James was a driving force for the team’s success, sinking 30 points and getting ten assists in the 28 minutes he was in the action. One of his baskets was a massive fader from well beyond the paint that sailed through the air and through the net. It’s impossible to know what he was thinking at that exact moment, but it’s likely he dedicated the shot to Bryant and his legacy.

Anthony Davis and Kyle Kuzma were ready to make statements of their own, as well, adding 18 points as the Lakers would ultimately walk away with a 135-115 trampling of the Trail Blazers on what had officially been dubbed Kobe Bryant Day. The team showed no mercy from start to finish, while Portland could only scramble and try, unsuccessfully, to catch up. It was an exercise in futility from the start. Lakers head coach Frank Vogel had said before the game, “We all know that [Bryant] would want us to keep our foot on the gas even though we won two in a row. That’s what we’re going to try to approach this game as.” And, that’s exactly what they did.

Go early or strike late? The perils of the Premier League transfer window

The English Premier League only just finished and yet it’s going to be back on September 12th, in just under three weeks. Yet the transfer window opened the day after the EPL season finished, opening for business on Monday, July 27th. While the Premier League is on hiatus right now, not all transfers need to be completed before the shortened 2020/21 English Premier League season begins. In fact, the window is open for 10 whole weeks until the 5th October and a domestic trade between the Premier League and English football League can go on until 12th October.

So is it better to get bodies in now or wait until the prices are driven down?

The Early Birds

Chelsea and Arsenal have already done plenty of business, with Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner already signed by The Blues, with rumours abounding that Kai Havertz, (£70m), Ben Chilwell (£50m) and Thiago Silva (free but 35-years-old) looking to arrive at Stamford Bridge.

Commonwealth Casino Commission of Saipan committed to enforcing compliance with local, federal regulations

Tuesday, 25 August 2020 (Saipan, CNMI) The Commonwealth Casino Commission of Saipan (also referred to as the ‘CCC’) has strengthened its commitment to enforcing compliance by Saipan’s gaming operator with all required local and federal regulations. In a recent interview, the CCC has made clear its commitments to preserving the integrity of the gaming license and ensuring that the operator follows the required regulations as part of their ongoing ability to operate within CNMI.

This includes ensuring that the operator adheres to any and all Commission Orders as required by the CCC in order to achieve a good standing within CNMI. The CCC and its administration will remain committed to monitoring gaming operations within the territory and, when required, issuing such orders to maintain a safe and fair environment for operators, their staff, contracted vendors and the CNMI population as a whole. The CCC has noted that this may, at times, require extraordinary measures to ensure a safe and sustainable operating environment. These types of measures are required and will be non-negotiable to ensure the development of a fair and sustainable gaming industry within the CNMI.

Mr. Edward C. DeLeon Guerrero, Chairman of the CCC, stated: “The Commonwealth Casino Commission of Saipan will remain committed to ensuring all casino gaming operations in Saipan comply with both local and federally mandated regulations. The CCC’s operation includes monitoring of all gaming facilities, including twenty-four seven surveillance operations at our only casino operation.“

Several recent orders by the CCC to the gaming operator Imperial Pacific International (CNMI), LLC. have included:

Indian authorities cracking down on small time gambling rings, cock fights

Indian authorities are cracking down on all of the small-time gambling rings they can find. A pair of raids in the last week helped put an end to a couple of gaming operations, arresting both the organizers and the gamblers present, and rescuing a whole bunch of cocks.

On August 20, police arrested three alleged gang members, Gagandeep Singh, Raj Kumar Raju and Sukhwinderpal Singh Sehgal, in Ludhiana, a city in the state of Punjab. Two more members of the gang are still being sought out. In total, rs 2.6 lakh (nearly $3,500) was confiscated.

The gang had fake permission letters indicating they were allowed to run skill games at their farm house. Exactly what gambling activity was being conducted hasn’t been specified, the authorities allege that even when gamblers won, the suspects didn’t really pay out.

Another raid in Hyderabad saw 19 arrested for gambling on rooster fights. Bibinagar police raided a farm where Rs 1.5 lakh ($2,000) was confiscated.

Jason Koon leads poker players championship final table

High roller crusher, nice guy, poker legend. What more is there to say about Jason Koon? Well, how about Poker Players Championship winner? It’s the tournament all the professionals want to win, the one with the ultimate in bragging rights, and with a massive $1.8 million up top, Koon will go into the final table this coming Saturday with the chip lead.

The prestige of the mixed game title cannot be underestimated. Whether live in Las Vegas with a $50,000 buy-in or remotely from home this year with a $25,000 entry fee, the Poker Players Championship carries with it a certain caché. Winning a World Series of bracelet of any kind is a great achievement, but winning one at those stakes against the sort of specialists in mixed games that arrive to play for the Chip Reese Trophy is something else.

This year, of course, due to Coronavirus, players are behind computer screens, so the best in the world get to appraise their opponents’ moves by the time it takes them to raise, or the bet-size of that power play instead of looking into the whites of their eyes. That didn’t deter 407 players ponying up the exorbitant high roller entry fee to take part.

With a guarantee of $10 million in the kitty, the entries mean that was raised to just past the initial prizepool, with a massive $10,175,000 to be played for.

Online esports tournaments deliver more shocks than LAN events

Online esports tournaments deliver more upsets than arena events, data has shown.

The Covid-19 outbreak forced esports to move online across all major games, including CS:GO, Dota 2 and League of Legends.

Tournament organisers were forced to rethink significant events that were due to be held offline, including ESL One Birmingham, DreamHack events and ESL One Cologne.

And the move online certainly seems to favour the underdogs, with data from leading esports betting site Luckbox showing a noticeable decrease in the number of matches ending with expected results.

Canada’s sports gambling efforts wiped out by ruling Liberal Party

In 2016, a bill was introduced in Canada that sought to bring legalized sports gambling to single sporting events. Now, four years later, there are only echoes of that initiative still in place, perhaps because the country has been trying to clean up the mess left after one of the largest casino money-laundering scandals of recent times. However, there was still hope to see progress made this year, and lawmakers were optimistic that Bill C-221 would find its proper place. However, the coronavirus had other plans, and Canada’s Parliament refocused its energy on curbing the pandemic. That began to make lawmakers nervous, and their instincts were correct. The Canadian Parliament has been prorogued by the ruling Liberal Party, despite a number of issues that were ignored due to COVID-19, and there’s virtually no chance of C-221 finding approval this year.

The Safe & Regulated Sports Act had made it through its first reading and was waiting for its second when the global pandemic disrupted everything. The bill had found more support this year than it had in the past, primarily because it was now being backed by the Canadian Gaming Association (CGA). The group had an epiphany and realized, like many others around the world, that legalizing sportsbooks would allow for a responsible gaming segment that would protect consumers while allowing the country to capitalize on the revenue possibilities. Despite that being the obvious result of legalized sports gambling, many lawmakers and policymakers everywhere still can’t grasp the beauty of its simplicity.

The CGA, after its wake-up call, was ready to help campaign for change, with its CEO, Paul Burns, explaining in February, “Amending the Criminal Code to legalize single-event sports wagering will provide provinces with the necessary tools to deliver a safe and legal option to Canadians, as well as the power to address important issues such as consumer protection while enabling economic benefits to flow to licensed gaming operators, communities and provincial governments.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his ruling Liberal Party have decided that lawmakers need a break and put Parliament and Commons on vacation until almost the end of September. While some could argue that legislators needed a little downtime because of all the issues they’ve been with, others assert that the decision was made in order to shift attention away from a scandal involving Trudeau. He is said to be immersed in fraud over the misuse of millions of dollars that should have gone to student grant funding, and the prorogue allows that fire to cool off.

Over 1,300 Twin River employees could soon be out of work

Casinos’ ability to recover from the coronavirus pandemic is mired in continuing issues that plague the consumer landscape everywhere. There are still plenty of people out of work, which reduces the amount of money available for free spending, and state and local governments are still restricting activities once taken for granted. The gambling industry is working to bounce back, but it’s going to take several years for them to return to the same levels they saw before the pandemic. In the meantime, many won’t be able to survive, and there will be a substantial shift in the gaming scene. Rhode Island can be included in the group of states having difficulty because of COVID-19, and its only two commercial gaming venues, both owned by Twin River Worldwide Holdings (TRW), could soon have much lighter payrolls. TRW might have to let as many as 1,300 employees go over the next month.

TRW is behind the Twin River Casino Hotel in Lincoln and the Tiverton Casino Hotel in Tiverton. According to paperwork the company has filed with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, COVID-19 is forcing the company to take drastic measures to prevent further losses, and it might have to permanently relieve over 1,000 employees at the Lincoln property and up to 300 at the Tiverton casino. The final decision will be made prior to the end of September, with the employees being cut by September 30.

TRW workers already have too much free time on their hands, having been furloughed as the coronavirus continued to wreak havoc on operations. The second quarter brought substantial losses to the company, which reported a $24-million hit because of the forced casino closures. While the venues have since been able to reopen, they are required to operate with a reduced capacity and for fewer hours each day, putting a strain on the properties’ revenue-generating possibilities.

TRW CEO George Papanier told analysts on a recent call, “While we have been able to welcome back a large percentage of those affected, there are still a large number of employees affected on furlough while we await the ability to increase capacity and amenities. He explained that the company was proactively identifying areas that could see reductions in expenses, but that more would need to be done as a result of the long-term ramifications of the continued suppression of gaming operations. Papanier asserted, “While we continue to be willing to spend money to capture market share and drive revenue, we don’t expect to simply return to the old way of doing business. We believe many of the efficiencies we have realized are sustainable over the long term and will result in improved profitability for our properties even while increased sanitation and cleaning costs become the norm.”

Bodog saw heavy NBA sports gambling action this past weekend

Inarguably, the NBA reboot at Disney World in Orlando, Florida will go down as one of the most exciting times in the history of professional basketball, and the postseason is bringing much more of the same thrilling action. Basketball fans are loving it, the league is showing its skills at managing adversity and sportsbooks are seeing a huge turnout. Global sports gambling portal Bodog continues to attract a lot of action in many sports, but the NBA is indisputably leading the way. The statistics from this past weekend show exactly how important major sports are to sportsbooks everywhere.

From August 21 to 23, 53.16% of the action on Bodog was on NBA games. This isn’t only because there were a lot of games on tap, but also because the games that were played in Round 1 of the playoffs were destined to be awesome – and they didn’t disappoint. From rookies setting new records to clutch baskets as time was winding down, basketball this weekend was on fire.

While the NBA took the most bets as a league, MLB was up there, as well. It accounted for 22.36% of the wagers placed, with the NHL following in third place with 6.22%. Almost no sport was left out, though, as the UEFA Champions League, Ultimate Fighter Championship, PGA and tennis also captured a piece of the action. Even ping pong is still finding a home with sports gamblers, receiving 1.67% of the bets on Bodog this past weekend. With so many options now available, compared to what was seen just a few short months ago, sportsbooks and gamblers both are staying busy almost around the clock.

As far as individual sports events, Saturday’s NBA game between the LA Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers saw more action than the others, receiving 12.4% of the bets on Bodog. After dropping Game 1 to the Trail Blazers, the Lakers bounced back in Game 2 and followed that up with Saturday’s win to move ahead 2-1 in the series. That game was an important step in the Lakers’ attempt at capturing a title this year, and they pushed things even further with a spectacular win again last night.

Majority want smoking to end in Nevada casinos

The people have spoken and they’re done with smoking at Nevada casinos. An online poll and discussion conducted by the Las Vegas Advisor reveals 72% of respondents want to restrict smoking on the casino floor.

The 1523 voters were provided with 13 options to chose from, and a clear majority chose options that would either ban or restrict smoking in casinos. The most popular option, with 23% of the vote, wasto ban smoking inside the casino. The runner up option, with 19% of the vote, was the more cynical choice noting that smoking should be banned, but won’t be for reasons of lost revenue.

7 of the 13 options suggested restricting smoking in some way, either by banning it entirely or by providing some kind of smoking area. The most popular options to allow smoking included leaving it up to the casino to decide (7%), just flat out allowing smoking (6%), and permissible smoking being a reason why Las Vegas is still attractive (5%).

The survey was conducted between August 5 and August 18, and also allowed respondents the chance to leave a comment. One non-smoker said you should give smokers at least one place in America to do their thing. “I think When you go to Vegas, you expect smokers and non smokers to mingle in casino floors, just as you expect kids in circus circus and Excalibur,” they wrote.

86 Connect founder Annie Siara pitches the benefits of the China market

86 Connect founder Annie Siara has become an expert on connecting western companies with the highly lucrative Chinese market. She sat down with our Becky Liggero Fontana to offer some advice on how Western companies can make advances in the Chinese market in a post-COVID-19 world.

Siara believes that the Chinese travel industry offers a roadmap to the state of the economic recovery in China. “We are seeing a great recovery in China with the domestic trips that have been taken recently,” she said. “A study showed that the May Labour Day holiday, between the first and fifth of May, 146 trips were made, so that’s a big recovery,” Siara said.

“We are seeing that the Chinese are willing to take international trips but that also depends on what is going on abroad and if they can make those trips sooner rather than later,” she added.

According to Siara, the stereotypical Chinese traveller has evolved from shopping junkets to something more modern. “I think the modern profile of a Chinese traveller is that they are looking for more experiences. They are looking for unique experiences and to immerse themselves in the local culture.”

Enteractive reactivates 10,000 players in one month

(Re)Activation Cloud provider reaches historic milestone in July.

Enteractive, the leader in player reactivation and retention for iGaming brands, has announced that in the month of July, over 10,000 players were activated or re-activated for Enteractive’s operator partners through the (Re)Activation Cloud platform.

The July milestone is a continuation of the strong Q1 and Q2 growth the company has experienced where the number of activated or re-activated players in Q2 rose over 200% in Q2 compared to 2019. The 10,000 players were either activated to make their first deposit, or re-activated making a deposit after some time of inactivity.

Benefiting from this milestone are Enteractive’s operator partners, seeing player retention and revenues increase from dormant players becoming active again or churned players coming back. Traffic driving operator partners, such as strategic affiliates, will benefit as well, since Enteractive also delivers improved retention with affiliate-tagged players.
