Wynn closes $34M acquisition of future casino site in Everett

A panel of Massachusetts architects had issues with Wynn Resorts’ proposed casino in Everett, and its nearly 390-foot luxury hotel tower in particular. Wynn Resorts, one of the largest casino operators in the United States, announced today that it has acquired a 33-acre parcel in Everett for $34 million as it advances plans to build a luxury gaming resort in Greater Boston.

Wynn completes land deal for Massachusetts casino

Wynn Resorts has finalized its $35 million purchase of a contaminated property along the Mystic River in Everett on which it plans to build a $1.6 billion casino. The company owned by Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn said Monday the purchase of the former Monsanto chemical plant site is a key step toward starting cleanup of the 33-acre parcel and eventual construction.

Boston Suing Gaming Board Over Everett Casino

Mayor Marty Walsh announced the city’s suit, challenging the commission’s awarding of the sole Boston-area casino license to a Wynn Resorts project in Everett, at a Monday afternoon press conference. Walsh feuded with the commission throughout 2014, as he argued Boston should be considered a host community for the Wynn proposal – and for the proposed Mohegan Sun project in Revere that lost out on the casino license to Wynn – but was rebuffed by the gaming commission in that effort.

Just when you thought the dust was settling a Hours after Wynn Resorts announced yesterday it had formally closed on the $34 million acquisition of a 30-plus acre site to house its controversial gaming resort in Everett, the city of Boston said it was suing the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to potentially block the massive development. As the Boston Business Journal reported, the dueling storylines have once again thrown the Wynn project in question and, once again, raised a sliver of hope that revival of a competing plan at nearby Suffolk Downs, which the city of Boston favors, may still be on the docket.
