The Star to build second tower in Jupiters casino

Star Entertainment Group plans to build a second tower at its Gold Coast site, in addition to the $345 million refurbishment of the Jupiters Hotel and Casino and the 17-storey luxury tower under construction.

The Star Entertainment, formerly known as Echo Entertainment Group, said that it had begun the planning process for the new 200m-high, 4.5 star hotel at Gold Coast site.

The new tower, which will cost more than $500 million, will include 700 hotel rooms and apartments, bringing up the casino and resort’s room numbers to almost 1400.

A live sports theatre is also planned to be a part of the transformation and the total investment under consideration to reach $850 million.

Gambling charges ‘likely’ dropped against arrested bridge players in Thailand

The group of foreigners arrested in an island in Thailand for playing bridge will “likely” walk away as free men and women, local media reported.

According to Pattaya Mail, authorities will likely drop the gambling charges filed against the 32 foreigners, all over the age of 60, arrested last week. However, Jomtien & Pattaya Bridge Club President Jeremy Watson could face penalties for organizing the card sessions, which have been going on since 1994.

Quoting Thai police chief Pol. Col. Sukthat Pumphanmuang, the report said Watson’s group “is not legally registered as a club and was using cards unapproved by the Excise Department.”

Last week, Thai law enforcement officers and members of the military raided a second-floor room above a restaurant in Pattaya and found a group of men and women, mostly Britons who live on the island, playing bridge. No money was seen changing hands, but authorities said the players violated a local law from 1935 that forbids anyone from possessing “more than 120 playing cards at a time,” and that “the cards did not have an official government seal on the boxes.”

Gordon Hayward: eSports is not ‘fringe culture’

An NBA star is coming out with guns blazing—no pun intended—in defense of competitive gaming.

Utah Jazz star Gordon Hayward recently penned an essay for The Players’ Tribune, in which he told traditional sports fans who are confused why watching people play video games has become popular to stop worrying so much. Instead, Hayward said viewers should recognize that the competitions share the same qualities.

“In the past few years in particular, professional gaming has become a thing, and it’s becoming more and more of a thing. This isn’t even a fringe culture. It’s a movement, really. And as a non-gamer, you can either acknowledge this fact, or you can be wrong,” Hayward wrote.

The basketball player said the essay was not written to defend gaming, but to open the eyes of non-gamers to “this incredible thing that’s happening right now.” And really, isn’t every single one of us a gamer?

Sands, MGM positive on CNY period

Macau casino operators MGM China Holdings Ltd. and Sands China are expecting growth in their business for the Chinese New Year (CNY) period.

Macau welcomes the Year of the Monkey this week and during the celebration, MGM CEO and executive director Grant Bowie told the reporters that the company’s performance during the CNY would remain stable year-on-year.

“Traditionally, the first two or three days are always quieter but business is looking very strong for the rest of the Chinese New Year period,” Bowie said, quoted by public broadcaster TDM.

Bowie has observed that the local mass market had rebounded and believes that the city’s gaming slump is recovering. He also revealed the company’s plan to study the prospect of salary hikes for employees during the MGM’s annual meeting in March.

City of Dreams Manila, Solaire lead city taxpayers in the Philippines for 2015, report says

Integrated resorts in the Entertainment City are proving themselves to be the country’s biggest players, particularly in terms of local taxes.

The 120-hectare Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation’s (Pagcor) development project is located in the city of Paranaque, and the local government said operators of the recently-opened City of Dreams Manila and the Solaire Resorts and Casino led the city’s list of top taxpayers in 2015, the Philippine Star reported.

According to the news outlet, Belle Corp. topped the city’s list after remitting a total of PHP 135.9 million (US$2.86 million) in real property tax last year.

Belle Corp.’s principal assets include properties at the Pagcor Entertainment City, which are being leased on a long-term basis to Melco Crown Entertainment. The 6.2 hectares of land is the site of the City of Dreams Manila, which opened to public on February 2, 2015.

Your Way Too Early MLB 2016 Futures Breakdown

It’s way too early to make MLB 2016 futures predictions, but I’m going to do it anyways. The win totals are coming out soon, even though we can safely project what those might be. What I do know is who’s valued where in the World Series futures market. Would you believe that the Cubs are the favorite to win it all in 2016?

Beyond that, I’m intrigued by all the happenings in the NL West with player movement galore. Are the Jays going to rebound from losing David Price and another key part of their franchise? Does the road to the World Series still go through Kansas City?

Let’s address some of the big ticket questions as we prepare for opening day in just under two months.

DraftKings tightens mixed martial arts grip with Kountermove acquisition

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has made an effort to change its negative narrative by acquiring mixed martial arts fantasy operator Kountermove Fantasy MMA.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Kountermove’s estimated 30k registered users have already found themselves redirected to the DraftKings site and asked to transfer their accounts.

DraftKings cofounder Matt Kalish told MMAjunkie that he expects an additional 5k paid users to migrate to the DraftKings platform to take advantage of the larger MMA prize pools.

DraftKings, which already has an exclusive partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, said it was excited about expanding its combat sports offering. Kountermove, which became the first MMA DFS site when it launched in 2011, also offers DFS contests on non-MMA dustups like boxing, kickboxing and jiu jitsu.

Wynn Resorts dragged down by Macau millstone but 2016 off to “lucky” start

Casino operator Wynn Resorts’ Q4 and FY15 results showed continued weakness in Macau but at least chairman Steve Wynn managed not to publicly insult the city-state’s leadership this time.

Wynn’s overall revenue in the three months ending Dec. 31 fell nearly 17% to $947m, while full-year revenue was down 25% to just under $4.1b. Wynn’s Q4 profit fell 20% to $87.2m while the full-year figure fell from $731.5m all the way down to $195.3m.

As expected, Macau was the millstone dragging Wynn down. Macau revenue was off 27% in Q4 while adjusted earnings fell one-third. Turnover at Wynn Macau’s VIP tables fell 37% while the mass market tables were down 11% and slots handle slipped 4.7%.

As with other operators with businesses in Macau and Nevada, Wynn’s Las Vegas numbers were far rosier. Overall Vegas revenue rose 3.8% in Q4 to $391m despite gaming revenue being flat at $171m. Table drop was down nearly one-quarter while slots handle fell 5% but both slots and table win improved thanks to higher hold rates.

AliQuantum Gaming Supports MENCAP Charity Via iGaming Industry Athlete

As the industry has matured, iGaming companies have made a name for themselves by supporting numerous charitable endeavors. From sumo wrestling to raise money for responsible gaming to BIG Foundation dinners supporting children’s research hospitals, major industry companies have raised thousands in unique ways. AliQuantum Gaming is continuing this rich tradition by sponsoring one of the industry’s own in his quest to run the “toughest footrace on earth” to raise money for MENCAP, a charity that aims to help those with learning disabilities live life to the fullest.

AliQuantum’s CEO and Founder Andy Jones appreciates philanthropy as much as anyone but he was sure he misunderstood James King, Group Head of Business Development at iGaming Business (part of Clarion Events) when he said he was running 156 miles through the Sahara Desert. “I thought he’d gone mad”, admits Jones on hearing about his friend and colleague’s intent to participate in the Marathon des Sables, a grueling multi-day “ultra marathon” that is the equivalent of running from London to Dover and back again in 120° heat, on sand while carrying a 10kg backpack.

Mr. King remembers it a bit differently. James recalled that “Within hours of launching my fundraising appeal and announcing my participation in the 2017 Marathon Des Sables, Andy got in touch to offer AliQuantum’s support. AliQuatum’s financial support has and will continue to push me both mentally and physically through endless miles of training and inevitably, 156 miles across the Sahara Desert. More importantly, Andy’s and AliQuantum’s generosity will benefit thousands of people with a learning disability to develop skills, gain confidence, and take part in the activities that really interest them. It goes without saying that I offer a huge thank you to Andy on behalf of myself and MENCAP”.

Jones has supported many various charities through AliQuantum Gaming sponsorship, but this opportunity seemed different considering it was an industry mate tackling an unbelievable goal. “We’re very excited to support James during his intense training and through his incredible motivation also support such a worthy cause in MENCAP”. In addition to helping him to his £10,000 donation goal, the corporate sponsorship supports an extreme training schedule that requires participation in multiple marathons and long races in environments not found in England.

Endorphina at ICE Totally Gaming 2016

Endorphina, a Czech-based online slot provider exhibited at ICE for the third time and they basically stole the show and it’s safe to say that every single visitor either saw or heard of Endorphina’s Twerk.

The games by Endorphina are not only trendy, unique and different than those found in their competitors’ portfolio, but they are also known in the industry circles for their integrity and stability. The team doesn’t lack creativity when it comes to new games themes brainstorming. Their newest Twerk slot is another proof of that as the game is the first one ever in the igaming industry to feature the most discussed dance these days. The video slot has certainly attracted a lot of attention and it has been greatly received by the audiences. Not only potential clients, but other game developers came to admire the graphics, sounds and features of Twerk at the ICE.

Miklos Handa, Business Development Manager from Endorphina comments on the Twerk slot success: “Visitors spent hours at our booth testing and having fun with Twerk. The feedback from our clients was that Twerk is one of a kind and there are no other games like it. We aim to come up with innovative ideas, just like with Satoshi’s Secret, and we hope to reach out to different player demographics and provide an engaging experience. “

There was so much going on at the Endorphina stand. They introduced their HTML5 solution to the ICE visitors which was very well received for its user-friendly interface. Endorphina twerk team was one of the best attractions of this year’s show and they literally made the ICE crowd stop every time they were performing. But ICE 2016 wasn’t just about Twerk for Endorphina. Their Satoshi’s Secret slot was shortlisted for the Game To Watch Competition this year. They also showcased a couple of more games – mysterious and enigmatic Voodoo and a classic fruit slot 7Up that will be out soon so make sure you follow their news section and don’t miss any of their game releases.
