Plan to save Mechanics' Institute on horizon

AFTER years of delays and disappointment, council chiefs believe progress is finally being made on bringing the Mechanics’ Institute back to life. The iconic building has been falling into disrepair since it shut in 1986 but hopes are rising that redevelopment of the adjacent Carriage Works could breathe new life into the historic building.

Giant shark teeth from an extinct species that swam the oceans millions of years ago have been washing up recently on several North Carolina beaches. “Megalodon was this large humongous shark that roamed the ancient sea ways in the Miocene and Pliocene time … which was about 15 million to 5 million years ago,” said Aurora Fossil Museum Director Cynthia Crane.
