Evolution enter Georgia via Adjarabet, launch Belgian live dealer studio

Live dealer online casino specialists Evolution Gaming have made their first foray into the Republic of Georgia’s online gambling market.

Evolution recently inked a deal to provide leading Georgian operator Adjarabet with a full suite of live dealer casino table games. Adjarabet’s punters can now enjoy Evolution’s generic shared tables – including live roulette, blackjack, baccarat, casino hold’em and three-card poker, as well as Immersive Roulette, Blackjack Party and VIP tables – and the user interface has been upgraded to include Georgian language options.

Adjarabet head of sport and casino Archil Kakhidze said the Evolution product line gave his site “a powerful, flexible and scalable solution that gives us huge scope to deliver the very best for our players as we grow and develop.” Evolution head of account management Sebastian Johanisson said his company’s offering was “a great match for Adjarabet in every way and we look forward to helping them achieve further success.”

Evolution also just launched its new Belgian live dealer studio. In January, the Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC) gave its licensed operators a July 1 deadline to ensure that their live dealer products were being broadcast from a studio based in Belgium. Evolution has met that challenge by launching its new studio from its land-based partner, the Circus Group-owned Casino de Spa.

Bet365 latest to launch app workaround to Australia online in-play betting ban

Online gambling operator Bet365 has become the latest to offer a technological workaround to Australia’s prohibition of online in-play wagering.

Under Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA), in-play or ‘live’ betting is restricted to in-person wagering at retail betting outlets or over the telephone. This last option has led a number of operators to launch apps that utilize voice recognition technology to allow punters to make in-play wagers via their mobile devices without having to resort to an actual person-to-person phone call.

Bet365 Australia’s new ‘betCall’ app joins rivals Ladbrokes and William Hill in offering Aussie punters this admittedly ingenious workaround. But while these new betting apps have caught the attention of punters, the country’s communications regulator has also taken notice. The Australian Communications and Media Authority recently lateraled its investigation of the apps to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to determine whether these companies are in breach of the IGA.

The workarounds have also earned the ire of the country’s domestic bookmakers such as Tabcorp, who have yet to follow their international competitors’ lead. As a source told The Australian: “If these UK operators were good corporate citizens they’d turn the service off and stop diverting the resources of the Australian Federal Police, who have more important things to worry about, such as security.” (Playing the terrorism card: truly, the last refuge of the noncompetitive scoundrel.)

VIP sues Crown Resorts over “misleading and deceptive” baccarat monitor

A high rolling gambler has sued Australian casino operator Crown Resorts over an alleged technological defect at one of their baccarat tables.

In March, Chinese gambler Yu Zhusheng went on a tear at Crown Melbourne’s VIP baccarat tables, losing $17m in a single week. But Yu claims that his final $300k wager revealed that something was rotten in the state of Victoria.

The casino’s Mahogany Room offers gamblers the means to review their wagering activity via an electronic monitor that displays the table’s “shoe history.” The monitor lists the cards that have come out of the dealer’s shoe and whether the gambler or the house won each individual hand. Some gamblers reportedly believe this knowledge offers them an opportunity to neutralize the built-in house edge.

In a lawsuit filed against Crown, Yu’s attorneys say their client noticed that the monitor had displayed the result of that $300k hand before the decisive card was dealt. Moreover, Yu maintains that the display incorrectly showed the house winning the hand in question, when in fact it was Yu who emerged triumphant (for once).

NYX Gaming inks Golden Nugget online deal as hacker targets New Jersey sites

Online gambling software provider NYX Gaming Group has inked a deal with the Golden Nugget casino’s New Jersey-licensed online gambling site.

On Monday, NYX announced it would provide Golden Nugget Atlantic City with a brand new web and mobile presence via NYX’s Online Gaming Platform. The Nugget’s online casino site, which ranked second on New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market’s most recent revenue chart, will begin adding desktop and mobile games content from NYX’s NextGen Gaming division this summer while the new platform will go live by December.

The deal means NYX now has a presence with half of the state’s licensed online gambling operators. NYX CEO Matt Davey said his firm was “delighted” to bolster its New Jersey presence while Golden Nugget VP of Online Gaming Thomas Winter said NYX had “impressed us with their world-class gaming technology, open content approach and proven commitment to invest in the market.”

Vegas Everyone? NBA Team Could Join NHL in Desert

By Joe Favorito @JoeFav @TheDailyPayoff

Later this week the basketball world will converge on Las Vegas for the annual NBA Simmer League, the annual showcase for unsigned and recently drafted talent.

Hundreds of media, agents and players will descend for two weeks of competition.

However according to a report in the Milwaukee Business Journal this week, The Summer League might not be the only time the NBA goes into the desert before too long. With a new arena on the horizon and millions of dollars on the line, the Milwaukee Bucks have mentioned getting into the Vegas mix should the state of Wisconsin continue to drag its heels on a new arena for the team.

Speaking to state lawmakers on Monday, Bucks president Peter Feigin had a pretty ominous warning should the team not get the desired arena it has been seeking for some time now:

Per the report: “Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin told Wisconsin lawmakers Monday that time was of the essence in approving $250 million in public funding for the proposed arena in downtown Milwaukee or the NBA will move the team to another city. At an informational hearing held by the state Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee, Feigin said the Bucks owners’ purchase agreement for the team includes a provision that construction of a new arena start in 2015. If that does not occur, he said the NBA will buy back the team for a $25 million profit and move them to “Las Vegas or Seattle.”

The Bucks, suddenly one of the NBA’s hottest teams, have been searching for new solutions for the aging BMO Harris Bradley Center for some time, and Feigin, a former Knicks executive, said the team needed to start construction by October or November to avoid the NBA starting a process of seeking buyers for the team. The team’s lease at the BMO Harris Bradley Center expires in 2017.

The demands come at an interesting time for Las Vegas. With talk constant that the city will either receive an NHL expansion franchise or have a team like the Phoenix Coyotes relocate, Vegas as a professional sports destination may actually becoming more real than just the home of the AFL Las Vegas Outlaws before long.

In the mix for teams is how legal sports wagering will be handled in the state. In past years when games were played in the state, the traditional sports books suspended lines on those games. The Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz each played home games at the Thomas and Mack Center for years, and when they did, no line was posted as part of the agreement. Similarly, lines for home University of Nevada Las Vegas basketball and football games have been pulled over the years when the teams were in state.

However this past year the AFL Outlaws not only had lines on their games, but they welcomed live online gambling into the mix as part of their fan experience.

With pay fantasy expanding and both the NHL and the NBA supporting both pay fantasy and the eventual nationwide legalization of sports betting, having franchises in Las Vegas could provide even bigger revenue stream as the process continues to evolve. Those franchises could become models for how legal sports betting could work once Federal law changes.

“Control of all forms of content, whether it is broadcast, digital or actual games is more vital to success than ever before, and with Las Vegas it seems more and more like the distribution of content, combined with a new state of the art building is becoming more than attractive to teams in at least two leagues,” said Dan Cohen, SVP, Americas at MP & Silva, one of the world’s leading sports media companies. “It used to be Las Vegas was a city that had all kinds of negative baggage for sports, now because of the changing landscape in the digital sports and fantasy space, it has become not just attractive but a hub of real conversation when expansion or relocation comes up. Nevada is no longer some fairy tale for professional sports, it is becoming a reality.”

Whether that reality happens in a year or five years remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure; “Sin City” appears to be an open and willing partner for professional sports teams, and now once one comes, others may follow.

Churchill Downs Can Handle Anything, But its Stock Can’t

When looking at the latest business moves and financial health of Churchill Downs (CHDN), it all seems to make sense. It looks like normal, savvy business people are doing normal, savvy things, looking to expand where they can, shifting resources to more profitable sections of the business, not borrowing too much money.

Downs has shifted its focus dramatically over the past two and a half years. Racing has gone from 41% of its revenues down to 32%. Casino has gone up from 30.5% to 40.5%. The reason is simple. Casino is more profitable than racing, at least for them. Gross profit margins on racing have been between 15% and 17% since 2012, while gross margins on casino have been around 26-27%. So you can’t blame a company for doing what works and focusing on the better parts of business.

The only problem is, its stock movement makes no sense. From 2007 to 2008, Downs was nearly cut in half from top to bottom. But look at a chart of it now and that walloping looks like a hiccup.

Does this look normal to you? If it does, then you have only been trading for 7 years at most.
